    The first mention of our cooperative was recorded in the minutes of the meeting held by the Association of the Small Shoemakers from Bucharest, on December 5th,1949. Then, the association came to the conclusion to found a cooperative where owners of small footwear workshops and their helps could unite their means and efforts and start working together.

    Two days later, on December 7th,1949, the Central administration of the cooperatives from Romania officially consented to give birth to a new cooperative, with a very revolutionary name: "The Progressive Shoemakers".

    Fortynine shoemakers agreed to associate and by putting together their own tools, stocks of raw materials and cash they formed the capital of the newly established cooperative. The scope of their activity was to produce, sell and repair shoes of all sorts for the population of Bucharest. The end of the year found "The Progressive Shoemakers" with 136 member affiliates and a monthly production of Lei 617,600, almost 20 times more than the total initial capital!

    In March 1962, the fact that the cooperative had had an astonishing success was acknowledged and the management decided to become more market oriented. The name of the cooperative was changed to "Arta Incaltamintei" which in English means "The Art of Footwear".

    The romantic era was over. The socialist administration of the country gave the cooperative its full attention and, although we were an exception to the socialist rule (the cooperative's capital was owned by the cooperative itself and not by the state), we were allowed to develop our design, production and sales facilities. Under certain conditions, we were even allowed to produce for clients abroad, which at that time was a prerogative for the state-owned companies only. Unfortunately, we had to perform our activities under heavy restrictions imposed by the government: Our production capacity, the number and position of our sales points, the import necessities, all had to receive governmental approval. Although we were not allowed to become competitors to the state-owned shoe-making industrial factories, we succeeded to conquer particular segments on the Romanian shoe market: Beside medium level mass-production of natural leather made shoes for men and women, we came to be known as the best Romanian producer for very limited series and custom-made luxury shoes.

    After the popular uprising in 1989, the entire Romanian society knew fundamental changes: The socialist system collapsed and the Romanians found themselves facing pleasant perspectives, so much dreamed about during previous years.
