Over three hundred years ago eizaemon fukagawa began handcrafting porcelain in feudal japan. At that time, japan was a feudal state governed by feudal lords. The area's feudal lord became the sponsor and protector of the fukagawa porcelain. About two centuries and eight generations later, feudal japan underwent a complete change. Emperor meiji's proclamation that japan would become modernized brought about the restructuring of japan's government and society. This restructuring during the mid 1800's provided the eighth generation of fukagawa artists the opportunity to form their own group of potters in a town named arita, the birthplace of japanese porcelain. This group, formed in the 1870's, called itself the "koran-sha"(meaning "orchid style"). The unique styling and beauty of the koran-sha group soon gained international recognition. The koran-sha won the grand prix in international exhibition in the united states in 1876 as well as the gold medal in the paris international exhibit of 1878. Another honor award in paris in 1900 followed by other awards of distinction prompted the japanese imperial household to order their porcelain from the koran-sha works. This ultimate honor established the koran-sha as one of the leading porcelain works in japan. Blending the japanese traditional porcelain styles of old imari, nabeshima, and kakiemon with a unique artistry, the result is a truly exclusive design and style of its own. And now, it has come to be called the koran-sha style...
